Coldstream seeks input on new budget, includes 9.7% tax hike

Feb 22, 2024 | 6:00 AM

The District of Coldstream may get a few more inquiries than normal as part of the public input process for its annual budget.

The municipality’s 2024-2028 draft financial plan includes a proposed 9.7 per cent tax hike for this year which amounts to an extra $155 per year for the average single family property assessed at $922,000.

“This increase is higher than usual and reflective of difficult, mostly unavoidable, circumstances such as policing costs, expected collective agreement settlement with the District’s unionized employees, increases put off from the prior year, and general inflationary impact,” Jeremy Sundin, director of financial administration, said in a public consultation package.

The public can ask questions or make comments about the budget in-person on online. In-person opportunities are being offered on Tuesday, March 5 and Friday, March 8 from 3:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at the Coldstream Municipal Office at 9901 Kalamalka Road.

Anyone who would like to provide written comments can email treasurer@coldstream.ca. Comments must be submitted no later than March 11 at 4:00 p.m.

The Community Charter requires the financial plan be adopted and submitted to the province before May 15 each year.
