Elections B.C. unveils portal for new riding information

Feb 20, 2024 | 12:00 PM

With new provincial ridings in place for the upcoming election, Elections B.C. has made it more simple for people to find out about their candidates.

An online portal has been launched where citizens can enter their address to learn the name and boundaries of their district, also known as ridings.

The newly-named districts, which locally include Vernon-Lumby, Kelowna-Lake Country-Coldstream, and Salmon Arm-Shuswap, will come into effect when the next election is called on Sept. 21, 2024.

Elections B.C. will also be mailing out brochures with a map of the new electoral districts. Those are expected to be delivered to every B.C. residence before the end of March.

“Our focus at Elections BC is to prepare voters for what to expect when they vote later this year,” Anton Boegman, chief electoral officer of British Columbia, said.

“There will not only be new electoral districts for B.C.’s next provincial election, but there will also be new technology at voting places to make voting faster and easier.”

The information portal was launched as the B.C. Elections Boundary Commission redrew the map to accomodate population growth throughout the province, which included establishing six new ridings for a total of 93.

The next provincial election is scheduled for Oct. 19, 2024.
