New leaders for Immigrant and Community Services Society

The Vernon and District Immigrant and Community Services Society (VDICSS) has new leaders at the helm.

Martin Friedrich was named the new executive director of the society, while Harriet Gutang was named the new manager of operations.

“Martin and Harriet both bring with them a wealth of leadership skills and related experience,” VDICSS stated in a release.

“Having both worked previously in other roles with VDICSS, they have a thorough understanding of VDICSS programs and services.”

Friedrich has had a career spanning across the public and private sectors. He was a professor and administrator in post-secondary education, a consultant to corporations and organizations, and also worked and volunteered for humanitarian agencies.

“VDICSS already does a lot in the community, but we can increase community awareness and do even more with our community partners,” Friedrich said.

“Our ultimate goal is to help newcomers to Canada become thriving and contributing members of the community.”

Friedrich replaces outgoing executive director Amelia Sirianni.

Gutang, who joined VDICSS in 2023 as a settlement worker, also has a varied background including working with government agencies and community partners to improve services to newcomers in the North Okanagan. She also previously held key managerial roles in retail and hospitality industries.

“It’s a privilege to welcome and serve newcomers and immigrants in our community, as I was in the same boat not too long ago,” Gutang stated.

“I am thrilled to continue to help formalize thorough and supportive programs for them.”

Launched in 1989, VDICSS provides services to newcomers, immigrants, refugees and naturalized citizens to help them settle in Vernon and the North Okanagan.
