The Columbia Shuswap Regional District has several priorities for working on the Shuswap North Okanagan Rail Trail in 2024.

A report to the CSRD board outlines four key projects for the rail trail this year.

  • Completion of the Sicamous to Mara project
  • Finalizing the Active Transportation Fund – Infrastructure Canada grant with Splatsin, and begin construction of the full rail trail between kilometre 0.5 in Sicamous to Stepney X Road
  • Begin the Armstrong to Lansdowne section
  • Undertaking an environmental review of erosion mitigation plans for 12 very-high risk locations this year, with the goal of completing the repair work in 2025

The CSRD board will be presented the details on the planned rail trail work in a report at its meeting Thursday, Jan. 18, where it’s expected to be received for information.

The report also stated that further grant funding was required for the Highway 97A pedestrian overpass project in Sicamous, and applications will be sent out this year for those funds.

A bylaw to regulate the use of the Shuswap North Okanagan Rail Trail within the jointly owned CRSD and Regional District of North Okanagan portion of the trail was drafted last year and approved in October.

The first section of the trail, a two-kilometre pilot project between Enderby and Splatsin, was completed late in 2023.

The overall goal is to construct a 50-kilometre, non-motorized greenway trail for walking and cycling along the former rail corridor between Armstrong and Sicamous.

A revegetation plan and an invasive species management plan were also completed in 2023.
