The new year is a time when many of us reset our healthy habits. Because oral health is an important part of overall wellness, we checked in with Dr. Krystal Hakkaart and CDA Valerie Suraci from Elevate Dental for a few tips.

  1. Establish a routine

“With New Year’s resolutions, people think about going to the gym or eating healthier, but they don’t always think about their mouths,” said Dr. Krystal. “Incorporating your teeth into that routine is just as important. So our #1 tip would be get back into the routine, book your dental cleaning.”

“New year, new you, fresh start” added CDA Valerie. “Schedule your cleaning and checkup because with routine and consistency comes the most success.”

  1. Switch to xylitol

“Healthy habits are a big part of routine, too, so let’s talk xylitol,” said Valerie. “By chewing xylitol gum or using products and sweeteners made from xylitol, you could reduce decay-causing bacteria in your saliva by up to 90%. That’s a huge benefit, so swap out your gum and sweeteners.”

  1. Wait a half hour after you eat or drink before brushing your teeth

“Remember to wait at least 30 minutes after eating a meal or drinking before you brush. This is a vital tip. When you consume anything acidic and brush your white. When you consume anything acidic and brushed right away, you are doing more harm than good.” Val explained. Along with waiting the half hour after meals and snacks, this tip also applies to any drinks and especially ones like coffee, red wine, or water with lemon.

  1. Stay hydrated

Water, water, water! “Your saliva helps neutralize any bacteria in your mouth, so staying hydrated and drinking lots of water throughout the day would also contribute to the success that you have,” said Val.

  1. Use an electric toothbrush

Get your motor running. “One of the best things you can do for yourself is to get a nice new electric toothbrush,” said Dr. Krystal. “And if you didn’t get one for Christmas, they’re probably on sale now.”

We wrapped things up with a final thought from Val. “Remember to brush, floss and smile your way through the new year, and all should be great.”
