Bundle up: Sunny, but frosty weekend ahead

Jan 12, 2024 | 10:35 AM

It appears the cold weather may stick around for a while.

Environment Canada is forecasting the sub-zero temperatures in the Okanagan will continue into late next week at least, although it will start to warm up a bit by Tuesday when more snow is expected.

This weekend will be very chilly, but sunny. Daytime highs will be in the minus 17-19 range while overnight lows will drop to minus 23, with wind chill values in the range of minus 30-33.

Vernon’s official low temperature Thursday (Jan. 11) was minus 20.6 degrees Celsius while the high got up to minus 6.4, according to Environment Canada.

Kelowna checked-in with a maximum temperature of minus 3.8°C and a minimum of minus 19.7°C.

Extreme cold weather warnings remain in effect for four B.C. highways including the Coquihalla (Kamloops to Merritt and Merritt to Hope), the Connector and the Trans Canada through the Rogers Pass where wind chill values are at potentially dangerous levels and could drop to minus 40 or minus 50.

“These wind chill values are expected to moderate on Sunday as the temperatures moderate,” Environment Canada said.
