Enderby arena shut down for rest of winter

The City of Enderby’s arena will be closed for the remainder of the ice season.

The city stated on its website that a problem with the refrigeration system at the Enderby Arena and Curling Rink was discovered, and the arena would need to be shut down to undertake the necessary repairs.

“Unfortunately, a sudden increase in corrosion inside of the refrigeration system has led to a build-up of sediment affecting one of its critical components. As a result, brine circulation pumps are drawing air into the system,” a city news release stated.

If left unchecked, it could cause deterioration in the system.

“The city is shutting down the system out of an abundance of caution. The safety of the public and workers is the city’s number one priority,” the release said.

The city added an engineer has advised that if the system is not shut down there would be damage to the components, leading to a “significant risk of a safety hazard.”

After the system has been shut down, the affected component will be cleared and the source of the corrosion replaced.

The city said the required work would affect the remainder of the ice season, which usually ends in early March.

Groups affected by the closure will be provided refunds.
