Armstrong pub reopens under new management

Dec 22, 2023 | 4:45 PM

Beer will be flowing from the taps for the first time in 18 months at Armstrong’s Branding Iron Pub.

The iconic landmark on Okanagan Street in the city’s downtown will be open for business at 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 23.

Rob and Penny Burkowsky signed a lease-to-own agreement with the existing owner of the property in September.

As one of the few pubs in Armstrong, there has been a lot of talk in the community about the revival of the business.

“Oh my gosh, everyone is so excited about having this pub back open,” Penny Burkowsky told Vernon Matters. “We are a country bar, country music, live bands on Saturday night, karaoke on Thursday, and meat draws on Sunday.

The pub plans to have happy hours from 2 to 5 every afternoon and daily food specials.

The Burkowsky’s don’t have previous experience running a bar, but were immediately attracted to the opportunity.

“I used to sing in Australia, so I performed in many, many clubs and bars over there and I just loved to interact with people, as you would when you sing. When this was closed down, it was my dream to open it back up and to have a Kiwi/Aussie flair on this,” Burkowsky said.

The menu will feature Australian style burgers including a kangaroo burger and other feature items.

The new Branding Iron Pub is a family affair for the Burkowsky’s.

“It is going to be myself and my husband and our two daughters that will be working here. It is whole new bar staff, the chef, everyone in the kitchen and they are my kids now. It is a family thing,” Burkowsky added.

There are also plans to have a private dining area for special occasions dubbed “The Love Shack” where couples can order from a three course menu, with wine and flowers.
