Fortis rates rising in new year

Effective January 1, 2024, FortisBC rates for electricity will be increasing.

The utility will be raising its rates by 6.74 per cent, as approved by the B.C. Utilities Commission (BCUC).

The change will translate to an additional $11.26 charge per month for residential customers who use approximately 1,100 kilowatt hours per month of electricity.

FortisBC state the hike is mainly driven by the increased cost of purchasing electricity, which it claims has risen in recent years with the phasing out of coal plants, lower hydroelectricity generation, and greater demand with a growing population.

“As we continue to transition to a cleaner energy future, FortisBC is also mindful of ensuring the continued reliability and resiliency of B.C.’s energy systems,”Joe Mazza, Vice President of Energy Supply and Resource Development for FortisBC, said in a release.

“This adjustment in electric rates will help ensure FortisBC can purchase sufficient electricity to meet our customers’ growing needs as well as make investments in maintenance and upgrades for its continued safe and reliable delivery to homes and businesses.”

The rate hike was approved by BCUC, which performed an annual review and approval process to ensure rates reflect the cost of providing service, from generating and purchasing power to maintaining and improving the electricity grid.

“We understand that energy costs are an important consideration in household budgets and rising costs may be a concern for some customers,” Mazza added.

“We encourage any customer who has questions about their bill to reach out. Our customer service team can provide information about energy conservation tips, answer billing inquiries and offer solutions that fit your personal needs.”

The utility provider noted growing demand can be seen in many communities, but Kelowna tops the list as the fastest growing community.

To meet the increased demand, FortisBC has invested $23-million to expand the Kelowna FA Lee Terminal Substation, and claims more system upgrades are planned for the future, though did not provide any specifics.
