A local rental company started in Armstrong 30 years ago is now part of one of the largest equipment rental companies in North America, Sun Belt Rentals.

“This is a sad but exciting day for me as the Nor-Val family joins the Sunbelt Rentals team. I look back at all the amazing friends, memories and opportunities that this little business has given me and I honestly don’t know where to start the thank you’s,” Nor-Val owner Jim Clipperton said in a social media post.

Sunbelt has been on a buying spree in Kelowna, including other Okanagan rental companies and now boasts over 2,000 locations in North America. The company has Canadian headquarters in Coquitlam.

“The two people that none of this would have happened without their bravery and faith in an idiot kid, deserve the recognition. Dad and Mom, Paul and Shirley Miron, the risk they took has created hundreds of jobs, donated hundreds of thousand’s of dollars and started friendships, families and relationships that are beyond counting. This wasn’t just a business for us, it was our lives,” Clipperton remarked.

Nor-Val has four Okanagan locations including the original Armstrong location along with Vernon, Kelowna and Peachland. Sunbelt will now have locations from Kamloops to Oliver.

“Going forward, the Nor-Val team has endless opportunities, amazing support and training, and access to an equipment fleet that would blow your mind. I did not make this decision lightly, but I know I made the right decision for myself, my family, my friends and my team,” Clipperton added.

“I will still be part of the Sunbelt team going forward and I will continue to be proud as I watch our team thrive and grow under the new banner.”

A purchase price was not disclosed. Industry estimates put the value of Sunbelt Rentals upwards of $27 billion US.
