City crews ready for when the snow flies

The City of Vernon is prepared to respond to the first snowfall in the season.

Environment Canada’s forecast shows below freezing temperatures over the next several days, which could bring with it some snow, perhaps by Friday, and the city is prepared to respond as soon as it starts to fall.

“City of Vernon snow clearing equipment and personnel are ready for the season and trucks are ready if required,” Ian Adkins, Manager of Roads, Drainage and Airport, said.

“Our crews clear roads, lanes and cul-de-sacs on a priority basis, according to the city’s Snow and Ice Control Policy.”

Snow clearing crews will begin operations on Priority 1 roads, such as arterials, collectors, bus routes, school zones and select problem areas.

Priority 2 clearing involves all remaining roads except lanes and cul-de-sacs, which are classified as Priority 3.

The city noted that it could take up to 72 hours for crews to reach all parts of Vernon after the snow has stopped falling.

Should snow continue to fall, crews may have to return to the Priority 1 roads to make sure traffic continues to flow throughout Vernon.

Drivers are reminded to slow down, allow for additional travel time and have patience when driving in snowy and wet conditions.

Residents are reminded that clearing sidewalks outside homes and businesses is the responsibility of owners and tenants, and that snow should not be piled on the road, in storm drains, or around fire hydrants and bus stops.
