A new roundabout in Vernon’s East Hill area is among the capital projects planned by the city in 2024.

The traffic circle will be constructed on Pleasant Valley Road at 39th Avenue, current site of a four-way stop.

The project includes a roundabout intersection design and construction, left turn onto 20 Street, shallow/overhead utility restoration or relocation in 39 Avenue and Pleasant Valley Road, new curb, gutter, retaining walls, street lighting ( including pedestrian crossing flashers), associated drainage, sanitary and water works.

City staff say they are coordinating with adjacent properties to accommodate the roundabout.

The $4.8 million cost will be funded from transportation development cost charges and the Growing Communities fund.

The timelines for the project have not been announced by the city.

City staff is seeking early budget approval for the project from city council, along with two other projects: 32nd Avenue reconstruction (20th Street to 18 Street: $2.5 million) and for spray irrigation infrastructure replacement and renewal ($2.3 million).

“These projects are, or will be, ready for tendering of the construction contract by the end of 2023. Early budget approval is critical in order to secure contractors, and ensures the successful implementation of the infrastructure program,” Mark Dowhaniuk, infrastructure manager, said in a report to council.

The capital plan and early budget requests will be discussed at council’s committee of the whole meeting on Monday, Nov. 6.
