Fees going up to drop-off waste at local landfills

It’s going to cost more to dispose of garbage and other products at local landfills in the new year.

The Regional District of North Okanagan (RDNO) has announced a number of fees will increase at their diversion and disposal facilities and transfer stations effective Jan. 1, 2024.

The minimum charge for a number of products, including garbage, will increase from $8.00 to $10.00. The per tonne disposal fees for a number of other products will also increase on January 1. A complete list of fees can be found at rdno.ca/ddf-fees.

RDNO said solid waste management facilities are funded primarily through fees along with a “relatively small tax requisition.”

“Fees cover operating costs as well as capital projects and long-term closure costs. The region-wide solid waste management service must be financially sustainable on a long-term basis so that operations, capital projects and closure reserves are adequately funded,” a news release stated.

For the minimum charge of $10 for garbage, customers can bring up to 87 kg (190 lbs) of garbage.

The RDNO said residents can save on fees by reducing the amount of waste they generate and their frequency of trips to the disposal facilities and transfer stations. The following advice was provided:

1. Take steps to ReTHINK Waste and prioritize reduce and reuse options to avoid unwanted items and get the most out of what you already have. Find tips at rdno.ca/rethink.

2. Use curbside green bins (where applicable) or consider composting to remove food waste (a major source of odours) from your garbage. Keeping compostable items out of garbage will reduce the need for frequent disposal. Properly managed compost will not have offensive odours and is less likely to attract animals. Find more information at: rdno.ca/compost.

3. Take recyclable products, including beverage containers, batteries, electronics, lighting products, medications, oil, paint, tires and more to dedicated collection sites (participating depot and retailers). Find options at on the RDNO What Goes Where webpage at: rdno.ca/whatgoeswhere.

4. Recycle most packaging and paper products for free with Recycle BC curbside collection and depot programs. Check out their guide at: recyclebc.ca/north-okanagan.

5. If you do not receive municipal curbside garbage collection, consider subscribing for a curbside collection service with a local service provider which might save you time and money.
