Weapons complaint leads to seizure of firearm, drugs and bikes

A firearm, drugs, cash and a large number of bikes were seized after a search in Vernon stemming from a weapons complaint.

Vernon North Okanagan RCMP responded to the complaint at a residence in the 1600-block of 33rd Street (Mission Hill area) on the evening of Friday, Oct. 13.

Police attended the initial call where a number of people were taken into custody, including one person with a warrant. A stolen bicycle was also found in the garage.

The scene was held and a search warrant was obtained so officers could enter the premises.

After receiving the warrant, officers investigated the residence where they discovered and seized a handgun, suspected drugs, cash, and multiple suspected and confirmed stolen e-bikes and mountain bikes, as well as a dirt bike, a BMX bike and a tandem bike.

Mounties said several of the bikes have been returned to their owners, but there were still some in their possession and police are looking to return them to the proper owners.

“A few of these bikes we recovered had been reported as stolen and because of that, we were able to return them,” Constable Chris Terleski, RCMP media relations officer, said.

“It’s a good example of why we encourage everyone to report all stolen property to us. In the event we do find it later on, it makes it easier for us to get it back to where it belongs. In any case, we would love to find the owners of these bikes, so if yours has been stolen or gone missing, and you recognize one of these, give us a call.”

Anyone who can prove ownership of their stolen bike can contact the RCMP at 250-545-7171 and quote file number 2023-18234.

The investigation into the case is ongoing, and Mounties say once complete, the findings will be submitted to the B.C. Prosecution Service for an assessment of charges.
