Coldstream candidates fined for breach of advertising rules

Three of the candidates who ran for council seats in the 2022 municipal election in the District of Coldstream are facing fines.

Elections B.C. said Jim Garlick, Simone Runyan and Glen Taylor all face monetary penalties for sponsoring election advertising without an authorization statement.

Garlick and Taylor were both fined $200, while Runyan was fined $150.

Garlick’s case involved using signs purchased in 2008 that he no longer had receipts for, but still reported them as valued at $750 in the 2022 disclosure statement. Rather than replacing the missing authorization statements, Elections BC said Garlick took down the signs.

The case involving Taylor saw him set up signs that did not include an authorization statement, and he later added the statements to most of them with a permanent marker.

Runyan’s violation involved displaying signs that did not include the authorization statements, on which she placed authorization stickers after being notified of the breach.

The letters were issued to the three people Tuesday, Oct. 17, and they had 40 days from the issuance of the letters to pay the fines.

They can also request a review by an adjudicator.

Garlick and Runyan were elected to council, while Taylor was not.
