Fall GoByBike Weeks rolling out in Vernon

Area residents are encouraged to take advantage of the nice fall weather when GoByBike Weeks kicks off.

The event runs October 16 to 29, and over that time, residents are urged to leave their vehicles at home and instead hit the road on their bicycles or other modes of active transportation.

Participants in GoByBike Weeks can register for the Vernon and North Okanagan campaign and log their rides to be entered into draws for prizes this fall including gift cards to local bike shops and downtown businesses.

Also as part of the fall edition of the cycling weeks, riders can take the Fall Ride Challenge, which involves exploring various areas of town and completing the tasks for a chance to win a $50 Vernon Downtown Dollars gift card. The challenges include riding to a lake, mural or park, with Fall Ride Challenge Cards available online here or in person at the Community Services Building on 32nd Avenue and at local bike shops.

New this year is the Let’s Ride! Team Challenge, which encourages people to work together to ride the equivalent distance of going from Vernon to Vancouver, or 440 kilometres.

“Fall GoByBike Weeks is all about prioritizing active transportation for daily tasks, work commutes, and outdoor adventures,” Anne Huisken, active transportation coordinator, said.

“This event has become a cherished tradition in our community. Let’s set an example for the province. As the weather cools, let’s keep riding – showing that riding is a year-round choice.”

The local GoByBike Weeks will be marked with a fall celebration station held at Spirit Square outside Vernon City Hall on Sunday, Oct. 22.

GoByBike Weeks aligns with the City of Vernon’s goals of reducing greenhouse gas emissions and promoting active transportation options.

As the days grow shorter, riders are reminded to wear bright reflective clothing and to use lights when on their bikes.
