Decision on tree heights blocking views proving difficult

Coldstream is still looking into concerns about lake views being obstructed by trees on Middleton Mountain.

A petition was presented to council last month, looking for regulations such as a bylaw to control tree heights for “lower” properties to protect the views of “upper” properties.

Council has asked staff for more information on the district’s ability to establish a bylaw to regulate vegetation.

Administration will bring a report back to council at a future meeting.

One option could be to take no action on the request at this time.

District staff said in a report to council, reasons for that could be that the issue is not part of council’s strategic plan and was not identified in a community survey in 2022.

There is also no funding for additional resources in the budget, community consultation has not been undertaken to gauge public support for the idea, and there is uncertain legality of tree height restrictions under current legislation.
