Vernon Fire Rescue Services said no one was injured after a fire broke out in a house in the city’s East Hill area.

Fire crews were called to a structure fire in the 2400 block of 25th Avenue at around 1 a.m. on Oct. 12.

Once on the scene, firefighters confirmed that a room on the top floor of a two-storey house was on fire.

Crews immediately began actioning the fire and were successful in containing the flames to the upstairs bedroom.

Three occupants and a dog were home during the fire, and they all managed to make it out safely. B.C. Ambulance attended the scene and the residents were checked for smoke inhalation. There were no reported injuries as a result of the fire.

“Firefighters were able to quickly contain this fire thanks in large part to one of the children in the house who called 911 to report the fire,” Deputy Chief Alan Hofsink said.

“His actions not only alerted firefighters, assisting in a quick response but also helped to ensure his family exited the building safely.”

Emergency Support Services was called to assist the family. Though the fire was contained to one room the extent of damage to the house from the blaze, the smoke and the water was not known as of the time of publication.

VFRS said an investigation into the cause of the fire would be launched Thursday morning.
