Survey launched on Coldstream Ranchlands trail and park plan

The public is being asked to give input on the plans for a new trail and parkland in Coldstream.

The Coldstream Ranchlands is a 126 hectare natural area on the north side of Buchanan Road. The property was purchased by the Regional District of North Okanagan (RDNO) in 2021 to create a passive recreation opportunity while preserving the existing ecosystem.

“The draft development plan includes key features such as a 6.9 km looping trail designed to avoid sensitive sites, amenities like garbage receptacles and dog waste bags, connections to existing and future trail networks, and plans for decommissioning or restoring existing trails,” a news release from RDNO stated.

“The objective is to enhance recreational opportunities in harmony with the environment and adhere to the Greater Vernon Trails and Natural Spaces Master Plan.”

Andy Affleck, manager of parks and recreation for RDNO, said the Ranchlands offer picturesque viewpoints and a unique natural environment for the public to enjoy.

“We want to ensure that the proposed development plan aligns with community interests, so we encourage everyone to share their thoughts through an online survey,” Affleck said.

The development plan identifies a primary non-motorized access on Ravine Drive. Parking is proposed within the District of Coldstream road right-of-way on Ravine Drive and is subject to the District’s approval. Additional access is possible through the Grey Canal Trail.

RDNO said key parts of the development plan have been carefully designed to minimize the impact on sensitive ecosystems and maintain the values of the agricultural land reserve.

“The proposed trail alignment was informed by extensive pre-planning efforts, including environmental and archeological assessments, ensuring a balance between recreation and conservation,” the news release said.
