Safeway gas bar gets Shell treatment

Sep 11, 2023 | 4:30 PM

The Safeway gas bar in the Vernon Square Mall is being converted into a Shell.

Shell’s distinctive yellow and red branding colours are being installed on the buildings this week.

Safeway phased out its gas/grocery coupon program over the summer in preparation for the re-branding.

Safeway had offered up to 15 cents a litre discount for grocery purchases, with fuel buyers being rewarded with grocery coupons.

Canadian Mobility Services Limited, a subsidiary of Shell Canada, signed an agreement in December, with Safeway’s parent company, Sobeys, to purchase 56 fuel and convenience retail sites that are co-located with grocery stores of Sobeys and its affiliates in Western Canada and into western Ontario.

The deal, thought to be worth about $100 million, received regulatory approval in July.

“These 56 locations will provide opportunities to offer customers expanded fueling options (including Shell Recharge electric vehicle charging, hydrogen and lower-carbon premium fuels) and enable growth of non-fuel sales through an enhanced convenience retail offering,” Kent Martin, GM Shell Canada Mobility, said.

Martin said Shell’s immediate focus will be updating the branding at the stations and ensuring they meet Shell standards.

“The company will also be assessing all of the new sites for potential upgrades and enhancements,” Martin said.

Safeway had stations in Vernon and Kamloops.

It is believed Shell will honour the United Food and Commercial Workers collective agreement for unionized staff working at gas bar locations.
