Vernon secondary suite change set for public hearing

Sep 8, 2023 | 1:00 PM

The City of Vernon will hold a public hearing next week on a proposed change to the secondary suite zoning aimed at opening-up more housing options.

City staff proposed a plan to allow secondary suites on properties with semi-detached dwellings of three or more units at its meeting August 14.

The staff report presented to council during that meeting stated semi-detached dwellings make up only about eight per cent of the properties in Vernon, and that even fewer would fall into the category of three or more units.

The report recommended the minimum size of the secondary suites be 29m2.

It also recommended that parking spots be provided for secondary suite residents in the Hillside and Agriculture Districts of Vernon, but not in the City Centre or Neighbourhood Districts. However, it did note that parking challenges in the latter areas would be identified in the upcoming Master Transportation Plan Review and work could be done to address those issues and potentially provide parking options for the secondary suite occupants in the future.

The public hearing will provide residents an opportunity to submit written and in-person input on the proposed zoning amendment before the matter goes back before council for a final decision.

The public hearing will be held in Council Chambers at Vernon City Hall at 5:30 p.m. Monday, September 11.
