“Nothing short of remarkable’: Vernon mayor proud of the community response to fires
From offering food, clothing, necessities, shelter, places for pets and animals or volunteering, Vernon and the North Okanagan showed up in a big way to help the over 1,000 evacuees that flooded in from the Shuswap and Central Okanagan wildfire zones.
“I want to take a moment to acknowledge the residents of Vernon and its surrounding area for your incredible acts of compassion and solidarity,” Mayor Victor Cumming said in a news release.
“Your response to the plight of those displaced by the wildfires has been nothing short of remarkable, as many of you have volunteered time and resources to help meet the needs of those who have come here for safety. You have shown that in times of crisis, Vernon residents step up.”
Cumming noted that while we aren’t done with wildfire season, tourism season can resume.
