Designated scooter parking spots rolling out in Vernon

The City of Vernon is implementing a new parking strategy for the electric scooters that people can rent to ride around the city.

A survey on the e-scooter use in Vernon was completed this past spring, and an early review of the findings identified a common theme of residents having concerns with how the e-scooters are parked following use.

In response to the findings, the City of Vernon, in partnership with Neuron Mobility, the operator of the e-scooters, has set up 12 black mats with e-scooter icons in key locations throughout Vernon to be used as preferred parking areas for the e-scooters.

The mats will be visible throughout Vernon starting today (Friday, Aug. 11).

The city stated the goal is for the e-scooters to be parked out of the way and not become obstructions on local infrastructure, adding this strategy has been implemented in other Canadian cities and has yielded positive results.

Additionally, e-scooter users are reminded to park the devices responsibly so as to not block sidewalks, pathways and bike routes.

The survey on the e-scooters was done as Vernon has been part of the provincial Electric Kick Scooter Pilot Program for three years now.

The results of the survey will continue to be analyzed, and a full report will be presented to city council in the fall before being forwarded to the B.C. government for further review.
