A Vernon Vipers defenceman will be able to further his education thanks to a scholarship.

Ayden Third was one of five winners of the BCHL Scholarship Program presented by Rogers and Shaw for the 2022-23 season.

Third and the four other players will receive a $2,000 scholarship award to attend a Canadian post-secondary institution.

The other winners of the scholarship are Jordan Fairlie of the Prince George Spruce Kings, Jordan Hendry of the Trail Smoke Eaters, Dylan Hewlett of the Powell River Kinds, and Nic Porchetta of the West Kelowna Warriors.

A release from the BCHL said the winners were selected based on their academic track record, their future career plans and education goals, and their time spent in the league.

“Education has always been a key focus for our league and this scholarship program is a great way to reward our athletes that excel in the classroom, while giving them the financial support needed to continue playing hockey at a Canadian post-secondary school,” BCHL Commissioner Steven Cocker said in the release.

“Thank you to our Founding Partners at Rogers together with Shaw for supporting this initiative the past four seasons.”

Third, who is from Regina, plans to take classes at the University of Regina.

Fairlie will attend the University of Toronto and Hendry will go to the University of Warterloo. Porchetta has already enlisted at Vancouver Island University and Hewlett has committed to Simon Fraser University.
