Community flagpole installed at Vernon City Hall

Jul 28, 2023 | 10:51 AM

The City of Vernon has installed a flagpole to be used for events and by community groups.

Standing by the decorative rock fountain in Spirit Square, the new flagpole will display special flags in recognition of events, or to promote a community group’s goal, objectives or initiatives.

Those can include civic promotions, charitable and community-service initiatives, public awareness campaigns, health and public service initiatives, arts and cultural celebrations, and local events or initiatives.

When a special flag is not flying, the municipal flag with the City of Vernon logo will be flown from the pole.

Community groups wishing to have their flag flown by City Hall can submit an application online. Groups are encouraged to review the Flag Policy ahead of applying.

The policy noted that the groups are responsible for the condition of the flag.

Certain flags will not be granted approval such as flags that represent groups that are political or partisan in nature; that promote hatred, violence, racism or discrimination; religious organizations; or commercial entities will not be flown. Groups that have already had their flag flown on the community flag pole within the same calendar year will also not be approved.

Requests to fly a flag on the new pole will be evaluated on a first-come, first-serve basis.

The City of Vernon’s flag policy noted permitting a community flag to fly outside city hall does not constitute an endorsement.
