Teen nabbed going over 100 km/h

A teenager is facing heavy fines after getting caught going over twice the posted speed limit in Kelowna.

Kelowna RCMP say a municipal traffic service member in a fully marked police car was parked on the shoulder of Stewart Rd. on the morning of June 14.

Police say the officer observed a vehicle travelling at a high rate of speed on the road just after 9 a.m.

The RCMP clocked the Volkswagen Jetta at 115 km/h in a 50 km/h zone, and the officer activated the emergency lights and pulled over the vehicle.

The 17-year-old male driver and lone occupant of the vehicle was informed as to why he was pulled over and was issued a ticket for excessive speed between 41-60 km/h over the posted limit. The teen was fined $368 and the vehicle was impounded for seven days.

“This type of driving behaviour is extremely dangerous, not only for inexperienced drivers but also for the cyclists that regularly use this route,” Sgt. Mark Booth with the Kelowna Municipal Traffic Service said.

“There has been an increase in speeding along Stewart Rd, since the new South Perimeter Way opened up, so you can expect a larger police presence in the area.”
