Students from School District 22 Vernon raced to some impressive results at the 2023 BCSS Mountain Bike Championship at Red Mountain in Rossland.

Sixteen local racers were part of the 450 participants from around the province in the high-calibre competition.

“Our small team did not disappoint bringing home medals and titles,” Paige McDicken, team coordinator, said.

All racers competed in cross-country (XC) and staged downhill (Enduro) style races on the challenging terrain at Red Mountain.

Representing Vernon Secondary (VSS) were Keith Bazinet, William Bazinet, Oren Carson, Charlie Cardew, Noah Milner and Drew Solmes.

Kalamalka Secondary was represented by Grady Barg, MacKinley Barg, Gavin Bartel, Sawyer Lehr, Sam McDicken, Will McDicken and Thomas Nice.

Rounding out the local competitors were Sophie Joerisson from W.L. Seaton, and Alex and Lex Hostyn from V-Learn.

Walking away with ‘King of the Mountain’ in the Bantam Boys (Grade 8) category was Lex Hostyn (v-Learn) with 1st place finishes in both the XC and Enduro races.

Noah Milner (VSS) also secured ‘King of the Mountain’ status in the Juvenile Boy (Grade 9) group with a 4th place finish in the XC and 1st place in the Enduro.

Not to be outdone, Sophie Joerissen (WL Seaton) posted a 1st place finish in the XC and 2nd place in the Enduro for Junior Girls (Grade 10) clinching the ‘Queen of the Mountain’ title.

Keith Bazinet (VSS) gave a solid performance with a 6th place showing in the XC and 2nd in the Enduro, finishing 2nd overall in the Junior Boys (Grade 10) field.

“The rest of the team did not disappoint with many finishes in the top twenty of their categories in intensely competitive fields. We couldn’t be prouder of this amazing group of mountain bike racers whose results proved SD#22 punched above their weight in this province,” McDicken said.
