Area firefighters heading north to fight wildfires

Firefighters from within the region are going to lend a hand with wildfire operations in northern B.C.

In a tweet, the Columbia Shuswap Regional District stated “firefighters and two mini-pumper fire trucks have been deployed to assist with firefighting efforts for the Red Creek Fire in Fort St. John.”

Tracy Hughes, communications coordinator with the CSRD, said seven firefighters from various departments in their service area are expected to arrive at the site today.

“We don’t know how long they will be deployed. It depends how long they are needed,” Hughes told Vernon Matters. “They will get deployed by BC Wildfire when they get on site.”

The firefighters are from Ranchero-Deep Creek, Shuswap, Swansea Point, Anglemont, Scotch Creek-Lee Creek and White Lake departments.

“BC Wildfire puts out a call for additional resources and they can volunteer their time,” Hughes explained.

“They are paid when they are deployed.”

The B.C. Wildfire Service reported the Red Creek wildfire was an estimated 2,900 hectares in size as of 8:55 a.m. Wednesday, May 10.

The fire, which is suspected to be human caused, was classified as ‘out of control’ Wednesday morning with the Wildfire Service stating it has not been responding to suppression efforts.
