Vernon waste collection fees set to increase

May 9, 2023 | 3:00 PM

Vernon residents will be paying more for their waste removal come this summer.

Vernon City Council was provided updated solid waste collection fees and charges at the regular meeting Monday, May 8, which sees quarterly rates increase for several services.

  • Residential garbage collection for both 120 and 240 litre carts increasing from $27.26 to $27.59 (per quarter)
  • Residential garbage collection extended service for both sized carts increasing from $31.12 to $33.98
  • Residential organics and yard waste collection for both sized carts increasing from $23.42 to $25.62
  • Residential organics and yard waste collection extended service for both sized carts increasing from $26.76 to $29.28
  • Commercial garbage onca-a-week collection increasing from $112.31 to $113.36

Additionally, the purchase of a new or replacement residential cart will be $80, marking a change from the previous system of covering the actual cost plus a 20 per cent administration fee.

The household garbage/organics and yard waste cart swap-out fees is also rising from $36.21 to $38.

Once-a-week commercial recycling will no longer exclude several neighbourhoods but will also not include industrial blue bags. The fee for that will increase from $41.56 to $48.57.

The rate for twice-a-week commercial recycling, which was not provided previously, will be set at $77.71.

There will be no change to additional commercial garbage pick-up, which is $248.79 per pick-up.

The city staff report noted the rate hikes are required to cover the annual contract pricing update with the solid waste collection contactor. That contract increase was based on pre-negotiated terms which included the consumer price index and fuel rate index.

The changes were approved unanimously and without discussion by council.

The increases will come into effect July 1, 2023.
