Flood risk in Okanagan increases

The flood risk in the Okanagan has been upgraded.

The B.C. River Forecast Centre says the valley, and other parts of the Southern Interior, are now part of a Flood Watch, an upgrade from the earlier high streamflow advisory.

A flood watch means river levels are rising and will approach, or may exceed, their banks. Flooding of areas adjacent to affected rivers may occur.

“Snowmelt rates have been increasing over the past few days, particularly in mid-elevation areas, with 25 mm to 50 mm of snowmelt being observed yesterday (May 1). Rivers have been rising in response to elevated snowmelt runoff,” an update from the centre stated.

Adding to the risk of flooding is the possibility of precipitation in the region by Friday.

“There is currently uncertainty on the location and severity of potential rainfall late in the week, with current forecasts indicating the potential for significant amounts of precipitation (30-60 mm) in areas,” the centre stated.

The centre is upgrading from a flood watch to a flood warning for the Lower Thompson including Cache Creek, Deadman River, Criss Creek, Bonaparte River and surrounding areas around Cache Creek and Skeetchestn.

A flood warning means river levels have exceeded bankfull or will exceed bankfull imminently, and that flooding of areas adjacent to the rivers affected will result.
