BCHL ends affiliation with Hockey Canada, going independent
The B.C. Hockey League is ending its agreement with Hockey Canada and will become an independent league as of June 1.
A news release from the BCHL says the change will “open more doors for players, raise standards and create an enhanced experience for athletes and fans.”
The league added the change will give it more control over its direction, and will allow for decisions that are in the best interests of players, their families and its 18 teams.
It will also allow the league to recruit younger players from other provinces, the U.S. and outside of North America, while also maintaining roster minimums for BC-born players.
