Public invited to explore history at Vernon Heritage Fair

Apr 19, 2023 | 7:00 AM

An event that aims to inform people about local and national history will take place in Vernon this week.

The Vernon Heritage Fair will be at the Schubert Centre April 20 and 21, an initiative that the North Okanagan Optimist Club (NOOC) has been involved with for several years.

“Our club, most well known for its previous Unplug and Play events, has also embraced the Vernon Heritage Fair (similar concept to a school science fair) in conjunction with the Museum and Archives of Vernon as it allows us to ‘bring out the best in youth, community and ourselves,” June Kerr, vice-president of the NOOC told Vernon Matters.

Kerr said past projects for students in Grades 4 to 7 have been very unique and have allowed Canadian history to come alive. Topics have included the discovery of insulin, Bluenose, Emily Carr, The North Okanagan Grey Canal, roadside attractions in Canada, and the evolution of aerospace, to name just a few.

This year, one of the participating students is doing a project focusing on the history of the Vernon Winter Carnival. Click here for that story.

Set-up for the fair will take place after 4:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 20 with judging on the following day from 9:30 a.m. to 12 p.m.

There is a public open house from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Friday, April 21 with awards and closing ceremony from 7:00 to 7:30 p.m.

Winners from the Vernon Fair will be invited to participate in the Regional Fair in Kelowna on May 16.

The fair’s history dates back to 2003 when the British Columbia Heritage Fairs Society was formed to promote an awareness and understanding of Canadian history and heritage among students and adults in B.C.
