Day to honour RCMP has special meaning in Vernon

Feb 1, 2023 | 3:10 PM

Today is the fourth annual RCMP Appreciation Day in British Columbia.

The day to honour the service of officers, got its start in Vernon after a local group collected over 1,000 names for a petition supporting the event.

The petition was backed by then Vernon-Monashee Liberal MLA Eric Foster who took it to the B.C. Legislature, and the day was proclaimed by the B.C. government in 2019.

The first RCMP Day on Feb. 1, 2020 marked 100 years since the Royal Canadian Mounted Police began. It was a result of a merger between the Royal Northwest Mounted Police and the Dominion Police.

Efforts to get the event proclaimed nationally by the federal government have so far not come to fruition.
