Jan 30, 2023 | 6:00 AM

UPDATE:

Renovations to the former Ramshorn Pub in Lumby are nearly complete with the upstairs converted into 24 mid to long term hotel units with kitchens or kitchen access.

The lower floor, which was the previous pub location, has been divided into two commercial units both 1120 square feet.

Royal Lepage Vernon Commercial division is handling the leasing of the spaces.

“A rare opportunity to lease 1,120 square feet of street level retail or office space along Vernon Street downtown Lumby,” realtor Ken McCluskey said. “Space has been fully redeveloped and ready for your tenant improvements. Separately metered heat and light. Rear delivery access from parking lot. $2,000 gross lease. Parking available. Ready for many uses. Situated in newly renovated Ramshorn Motel and may be ideal for restaurant use.”

One of Lumby’s oldest buildings, in the village’s downtown, is getting significant work.

The Ramshorn Pub, formerly the Ramshorn Hotel, was the first hotel built in Lumby in 1893 at the corner of Vernon Street and Shuswap Avenue.

The building has burned to the ground on two occasions and fell into disrepair in recent years, before being purchased by a Vernon company.

“My understanding is it is going to be 24 hotel units, some with kitchens and some with access to kitchens, executive style,” Lumby Mayor Kevin Acton said. “It will be good for short to medium stays, for hockey teams, short term workers and so on.”

The same company owns Vernon’s Okanagan Royal Park Inn, Canada’s Best Value Inn and Resort and Lumby’s Twin Creeks Motel.

The building was gutted and had to undergo asbestos removal before reconstruction could begin.

Lumby, like the rest of the region, is suffering a serious shortage of rentals and housing of all types.

“Anything that looks or acts like a house right now would be welcomed,” Acton told Vernon Matters.

The building was the subject of a lot of conversation amongst locals as it is in the heart of the village and was becoming an eyesore, with some suggesting it should be torn down.

“I can tell you that council was getting so frustrated that at one point, council actually made an offer to purchase the building,” Acton said. “It is an anchor building, it is on the four corners, and it is supposed to look nice. The fact that these guys bought it and are putting an effort into it, makes council extremely happy.”

A completion date for the project has not been released.

There are more improvements coming to the same block as a new automatic carwash is proposed next to an existing service station, to replace an out-of-service hand wash.

Lumby has been experiencing a mini boom lately with a couple of housing subdivisions and a proposed retail residential development.
