New playgrounds at local parks given green light

Kids will be able to enjoy new playground equipment at two Coldstream parks by later this year.

The District’s council has approved spending $110,000 to buy and install playground equipment at Lavington Park and Coldstream Park ($55,000 for each project).

The funding will come from a parks equipment reserve.

Mayor Ruth Hoyte said the process will begin shortly.

“And later this year, we should have that all installed,” Hoyte told Vernon Matters.

A staff report to council said the district will work with Green Roots Play Equipment to add additional components to the plans submitted to council in August 2022.

Staff will source local logs and boulders for natural wood and rock climbing features in both parks.

“Green Roots will provide installation advice for the natural components as well as layout to ensure proper distancing from other play components is considered,” the report stated.

For both locations, most of the new equipment is designed for children 18 months to 5 years old and is meant to augment the existing equipment that is suitable for children 5 to 12 years old.

The natural climbing structures will accommodate all age groups.

The original concepts costed between $45,000 and $49,000, but has grown since then.

“By augmenting with locally sourced logs and boulders, the price tag of $55,000 will create fun playscapes at both parks, offering a variety of choices for activity,” the report stated.
