New features at Vernon City Hall revised

The new flag pole to be installed outside Vernon City Hall has a new proposed location, and the memorial plaque has new backers.

A report to Vernon council at the regular meeting Monday, Jan. 23, proposed installing the flag pole next to the sister city sign and the fountain outside city hall.

However, Councillor Akbal Mund noted the purpose of the flag pole was to be used for special events rather than using the flag poles on the roof of City Hall. These events would likely involve speeches, and suggested moving it away from the fountain, which can be loud and potentially disruptive during a ceremony.

He instead suggested installing the flag pole in the southeast corner of the Civic Plaza near the parking lot and where the two rocks are located.

James Rice, Vernon’s director of operations services, stated the location near the fountain was selected as the events that require a flag raising typically bring in large groups of people and the spot near the fountain would not take away from the permanent flags flying on the property, but Mund argued his proposed location could accommodate the crowds.

Both Mayor Victor Cumming and Councillor Mund noted an event to mark the 2022 [postponed] Winter Games was held in the outlined section of Civic Plaza and was able to accommodate a large crowd without having people gather in the parking lot.

It was also noted the grassy embankment off the parking lot provides a good gathering place for people attending ceremonies or events.

The ground at the area identified by Mund is cement, as opposed to the landscaped area identified by city staff near the fountain.

However, council noted the flag could go into the grass embankment off the parking lot right next to the corner in question, or the cement could be broken up and the flag could be installed among the cobblestone pavers that make up the plaza.

Council tasked staff with investigating the newly proposed location and report back to council with a revised plan.

Also at Monday’s meeting, the motion to approve the installation of a memorial plaque on one of the two rocks in Civic Plaza to honour the last three councillors who passed while in office was deferred.

Coun. Kari Gares indicated during the meeting that a private funding source may have been found to cover the $5,000 cost associated with the creation of the plaque.

Gares said the matter would be brought back before council at the next regular meeting.

The plaque would honour Patrick Nicol, Bob Spiers and Dalvir Nahal.
