Pipe burst backstage at Performing Arts Centre

At least one show has been moved after a pipe burst backstage at the Vernon and District Performing Arts Centre.

The pipe burst sometime overnight and, as of time of publication, a restoration company was on site assessing the cause of the burst and the extent of the damage.

“They’re still taking a look around and cleaning up the water, so it’s not small but we’re waiting to find out exactly what they say,” Angela Pells, marketing director for the Performing Arts Centre, told Vernon Matters.

“We have a lot of equipment that’s wet. We’re a professional theatre so we have a lot of expensive technical equipment backstage and there’s going to be some damage but we’re not really sure yet how big it is.”

The theatre had planned to host the St. James School Christmas Concert Thursday night, and that show has now been moved to the Greater Vernon Recreation Centre Auditorium and will take place at 7 p.m. as previously scheduled. Anyone with questions are encouraged to contact the school office at 250-542-4081.

“We are extremely grateful for the quick response of our service-providers who have stepped-in to support us,” said Executive Director Jim Harding in a release.

He added the safety of performers, staff and volunteers are the highest priority and that the theatre will work with organizers to determine if shows can go on or if they will need to be rescheduled or cancelled.

“Once assessment have been completed, we will be communicating with the organizers of our scheduled guest artist bookings, our SPOTLIGHT shows and directly with all our ticketholders. Until then, we appreciate everyone’s concerns, patience, and support at this time.”
