RCMP respond to series of shootings in Merritt

UPDATE: 3:30 p.m.

The mayor of Merritt said a barrage of gunfire at three separate locations in the community early this morning is concerning even though no one was hit.

Mike Goetz says he has been told by the RCMP that roughly 100 rounds were fired in total in the shootings that started on the Coldwater reserve, followed by shootings along Mamet Lake Road.

A notification on the Lower Nicola Indian Band’s website said the suspect or suspects have been described as driving a dark jeep or pickup truck and asks residents to stay inside.

R-C-M-P have not identified a motive for the attacks and say their investigation is in its early stages.

RCMP are investigating at least three shootings that happened between 5 a.m. and 6:30 this morning around Merritt .

A statement from police said the attacks are believed to be linked and targeted, but it’s believed there is no further risk to the public.

Merritt Mayor Mike Goetz was told that as many as 100 rounds were fired but no one was hurt.

More details could be released later today.
