Residents awarded prizes for FireSmart practices

Several Spallumcheen residents have been rewarded for FireSmarting their properties.

The township awarded several prizes after holding a FireSmarting contest for residents and youth in the community.

“It is so important to council to support and encourage our residents to get involved in FireSmarting their properties. Many of our wildfire interface areas are privately owned so we all have to work together to help protect our community,” Mayor Christine Fraser said.

“It was great to have a chance to meet everyone who participated in the contest, and especially great to see the youth that got involved.”

A total of seven prizes were awarded in the two categories.

Brad and Ashley Marta won the resident grand prize, a $300 gift basket of local products and a 72-hour emergency kit.

Carl and Diane Mintz were runners up and awarded a $100 gift basket and a 72-hour emergency kit.

“It really isn’t that hard to follow the FireSmart principals and it makes me feel good to know our property and our family is that much safer in the event of an emergency,” Ashley Marta said.

In the youth category, Reegan Mintz won the grand prize — a pair of Apply AirPod Pros.

Hazel Marta, Ryan Mintz, Sophie Marta and Emily Rozsas were runners up in the youth category and were each awarded a Best Buy gift card and a small prize pack.

Spallumcheen’s FireSmart contest was created through a $35,000 Community Resiliency Investment – FireSmart funding program.
