First-degree murder charge laid in death of a B.C. RCMP officer

A charge of first-degree murder has been laid against a man in the death of British Columbia RCMP officer Const. Shaelyn Yang.

Police said Yang was stabbed to death Tuesday during an altercation while she accompanied a Burnaby city staff member at a homeless campsite.

The B.C. Prosecution Service says in a statement that Jongwon Ham is accused in her death and made his first court appearance today.

The House of Commons held a moment of silence to honour Yang today and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau paid tribute to the fallen officer.

Yang was a mental health and homeless outreach officer, and Trudeau told the House that mental health supports need to be stepped up so police are not the sole providers for such outreach in many situations.

The prosecution service says Ham was remanded and will return to court on Nov. 2.
