A detour put in place Monday due to a water main break on Pottery Road near 18th Street in Vernon’s East Hill will remain in effect for perhaps another week.

The water main has been repaired, but now crews are working to fix the damage to the asphalt.

“The roadway repairs are expected to take up to a week to complete,” said Christy Poirier, communications manager with the city.

About 12 homes that were without water, had service restored around 3 p.m. Monday.

Part of Pottery Road in Vernon has been closed due to a water main break that took place overnight near 18th Street.

Crews are on site, repairing the infrastructure that has caused a water outage for about 12 properties.

“As part of the repair process, Pottery Road has been closed from 15th Street to Highway 6, and 18th Street has been closed between 20th Avenue and Pottery Road (see map below),” a city news release stated. “These areas will be accessible to local traffic only. A detour has been put in place for all other travellers.”

Water service for the affected properties is expected to be restored within the next four or five hours (news release was issued at 2:45 p.m.), but full repairs to the area and road could take up to one week.

Residents that lose water service may notice turbidity (cloudiness) or air in their tap water once service has been restored. Anyone who does see either of those things should run a cold water tap at a low volume until the water has cleared.

The city reminds motorists to slow down in construction and detour zones and to follow all traffic control measures.

“The city appreciates everyone’s patience and understanding while these emergency repairs are being completed,” the release stated.
