Oversee Zoning Variance Applications

Volunteers sought for Vernon’s Board of Variance

Oct 4, 2022 | 12:54 PM

Citizens interested in overseeing minor variances to Vernon’s zoning bylaw can now volunteer.

The City of Vernon is seeking four individuals to join the independently operated board of variance.

The board, governed by board of variance bylaw, is tasked with considering minor variances to zoning regulations such as the siting, dimensions and size of proposed buildings in Vernon.

The board will review proposed development variances to ensure the plans are not inappropriate for a site; do not adversely affect the natural environment; do not negatively impact adjacent lands; do not vary permitted uses and densities; and do not defeat the intent of the bylaw.

If the proposal is deemed acceptable by the board, it will be forwarded to Vernon city council for consideration.

People assigned to the board will serve until January 2024. Members are expected to attend meetings, as required depending on applications, and should also be prepared to be open and available to the public on a monthly basis.

Anyone interested in volunteering as a member of the board of variance can pick up a copy of the board of variance bylaw and an application form at City Hall or at the city’s website.

Applications will be accepted until all four positions are filled.

Additional information on the function of a board of variance can be seen at the B.C. government’s website
