Teams from Japan and Kamloops win top prizes at Vernon curling classic

There was a strong international flavour to the championship games at the Prestige Hotels and Resorts Curling Classic.

The three-day event, which wrapped up Sunday at the Vernon Curling Club, was making its return from a two-year pandemic absence and featured Canadian, American and international teams competing for cash prizes.

Former B.C. champion Corryn Brown of Kamloops defeated Ikue Kitazawa of Japan 5-4 to win the women’s top prize of $5,000

Riku Yanagisawa beat Kohsuke Hirata 6-2 in the all-Japanese men’s final, winning $4,000.

Rob Norbert of Vernon finished fifth in the men’s event, collecting $1,000.

The event dates back several decades at the Vernon Curling Club, and used to give away four brand new cars to the winning team when it was known as the ‘Car Speil.’
