Some of world’s best in town for Prestige Curling Classic

The Vernon Curling Club is hosting some of the top names in the sport this weekend.

The 2022 Prestige Hotel and Resorts Curling Classic started Thursday (Sept. 29) and continues until Sunday.

John Shuster, the Olympic gold medal winner in 2018 from Wisconsin, headlines the 12 men’s teams along with past B.C. champions Brent Pierce and Sean Geall.

Vernon club manager Dave Merklinger is also skipping a squad.

Ladies teams include former B.C. champion Corryn Brown of Kamloops along with six-time Japanese champion Satsuki Fujisawa, the bronze medal winner at the 2018 Olympics.

The men are playing for $18,000 in prize money while the women are seeking a share of $31,500.

Draws today go at 9, 1, 5 and 8, and the same on Saturday.

The quarter finals are at 9 a.m Sunday with the semi finals at noon and the finals at 4 p.m.

Club manager Dave Merklinger says the event is making its return after a two year pandemic pause.

“It’s one of the premiere world class curling events in Canada, attracting top ranked teams from across the nation and around the world,” said Merklinger.

“Thanks to Prestige Hotels and Resorts for returning as title sponsor, along with all the local sponsors that make this event possible. The people that really make this event possible are the volunteers: Drivers, door people, score keepers, etc,” Merklinger added

The first draw for the ladies was Thursday .
The first draw for men is today.

Spectators are welcome to come take in the action.
