New Vernon child care centre set to open in October

One of the two new child care facilities in Vernon is on track to open within a month.

A report to Vernon council said the Lakers Child Care Facility on Cummins Road has reached substantial completion, and system testing, commissioning and set up are underway.

The facility is expected to be reviewed for licensing for child care by Interior Health in mid-October, at which point it will open.

Meanwhile, the exterior finishes and most of the landscaping was completed at the Vernon Recreation Complex facility. The installation of the play area fencing outside as well as the final paint touch-ups and the installation of plumbing and lighting fixtures inside the building are underway.

Substantial completion, testing, commissioning and occupancy of the facility are expected for the end of October, with the review by Interior Health for licensing anticipated for November.

Once complete, the two facilities will be able to provide 198 new licensed child care spaces for area children.

The report will be presented to Vernon council for information at its regular meeting Monday, Sept. 26.
