Rising student numbers in Vernon District

Sep 23, 2022 | 1:40 PM

More students are filling Vernon schools, and more teachers are being hired to educate them.

School District 22 is reporting enrolment was up by 185 students, or two per cent, last year, to 8,672 students.

The school district employed about 542 full-time-equivalent teachers, also an increase of 2 per cent from the year before.

“Early indications are that this growth trend will be sustained in the 2022-2023 school year,” secretary-treasurer Adrian Johnson said. “A report presented to the board of education showed that over the past five years, enrolment has increased by 3.4 per cent, while the number of teachers has increased by 10.6 per cent.”

The enrolment numbers for this school year should be finalized in October. According to projections earlier this year, District 22 was expecting an increase of 98 full-time students this fall, with a decrease of 35 in online learning programs.

The education board has approved the district’s financial statements for 2021-2022 school year which showed revenue growth of four per cent to $114.9 million.

The additional funds were used to offset inflationary increases and employ additional staff to support the increase in students.

Sick leave was an area of concern, with officials saying the numbers were much higher than usual.

The cost of replacing absent staff exceeded budget by about $700,000 last year.
