COVID-19 cases fall locally, increase regionally, provincially

COVID-19 cases are climbing in the Interior and across B.C., but are decreasing locally.

After two consecutive weeks of having new case figures in the mid-20s, the B.C. Centre for Disease Control (BCCDC) weekly report showed there were 10 new cases of the virus in the Vernon health area between September 11 and 17.

Vernon had 25 confirmed cases of the virus the previous week, and 23 the week before.

The BCCDC report showed that, while case figures declined locally, the figures across the province rose.

The report shows a total of 637 confirmed cases of the virus in B.C. between Sept. 11 and 17, including 126 in the Interior.

Both those figures were up on a weekly basis, when there was 96 confirmed cases in the Interior and 574 in all of B.C.

While cases rose on a week-over-week comparison, deaths and hospital admissions linked to the virus declined.

The BCCDC report stated there were 155 hospital admissions across B.C., down from 180 the week prior. While the provincial total was down, the Interior did see a slight increase in hospital admissions from 19 to 21 in the latest week.

There were a total of 27 intensive care admissions in all of B.C., including three in the Interior in the most recent reporting week.

The weekly report also identified 22 deaths linked to COVID-19 between Sept. 11 and 17, including nine from the Interior.

The provincial total was down from the 26 the week prior, though the regional figure was up from the seven deaths recorded the week before.

To date, there have been 384,266 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in B.C., and 1,253 British Columbians have died due to the virus. Of those figures, 68,403 cases and 634 deaths were recorded in the Interior.

The BCCDC report did not include hospitalization or death data for individual health authorities.
