Candidate condemns sign vandalism

One of the candidates running for Vernon mayor suggests high tensions may be one reason why some of his campaign signs have been vandalized.

Scott Anderson issued a news release Monday, condemning the destruction of signs, saying that’s not how democracy should work.

“The ballot box is where we should be contesting the election, not our city’s boulevards,” said Anderson, who has had several signs destroyed and knocked down in various places around the city.

Anderson issued an appeal to the vandals

“I can’t ask my opponent’s supporters to stop defacing my signs, but I will ask that if you support me, please refrain from defacing or destroying my opponent’s signs.”

Anderson said it may be a sign of a tight race for the city’s top elected position.

“I understand that tensions are running high in both mayoral camps,” said Anderson, “But I want to remind everyone that tampering with an election sign is illegal.”

Anderson, a two-term city councillor, is up against incumbent Victor Cumming and Erik Olesen for mayor in the Oct. 15 Vernon election.
