Vernon home to 23 new COVID-19 cases last week

Last week, Vernon had its highest new weekly COVID-19 case totals since mid-May.

The B.C. Centre for Disease Control (BCCDC) reports that the Vernon health area recorded 23 cases of the virus between Aug. 28 and Sept. 3.

That figure is several cases higher than the 15 confirmed in the area the week prior, and the highest number on record since 32 cases were confirmed in greater Vernon between May 15 and 21.

The BCCDC reported that, while the local case numbers rose, the regional and provincial numbers fell on a week-over-week basis.

Between Aug. 28 and Sept. 3, there were 114 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the Interior and 617 in all of B.C. Those are down from the 153 cases recorded in the Interior and 651 confirmed in the province the week prior.

The Interior saw 29 people administered to hospital with COVID-19 and the province had a total of 147 hospitalizations in the latest week. Those are down from the previous week which saw 31 and 198 hospital admissions, respectively.

There were six patients admitted to intensive care units in the Interior last week, up from five the week before, but in all of B.C., there were just 25 ICU patients with COVID-19, down from 27 the week before.

The BCCDC reported 22 deaths linked to the virus in all of B.C., including eight in the Interior. Those figures are also down from the previous 43 deaths in all of B.C. and 12 in the Interior.

To date, there have been 5,696 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the Vernon health area, 68,183 in the Interior, and 383,054 cases in all of B.C.

A total of 4,183 British Columbians have died due to the virus, with 616 of those deaths coming from the Interior.

The BCCDC report does not include hospitalization or death data for individual health regions.
