Sep 6, 2022 | 12:39 PM

The 2022 local general election races are heating up throughout the North Okanagan, as more candidates submitted their nomination packages.

Potential candidates have until this Friday, Sept. 9, to submit their paperwork and officially join the race.

The City of Vernon has a new candidate, Ed Stranks, running for a councillor seat.

He joins incumbents Teresa Durning, Kelly Fehr, Kari Gares, Brian Quiring, and Dawn Tucker on the ballot.

As of time of publication, no candidates for Vernon’s mayoral seat officially filed paperwork, but both Victor Cumming (incumbent) and Scott Anderson (councillor) announced they will run.

As of today, there are seven candidates in the running for District of Coldstream council, as Jeff Stevenson and Jeremy Levy recently submitted nomination packages. The pair join incumbents Pat Cochrane and Doug Dirk, current mayor Jim Garlick, as well as Alex Dantzer and Don Jeffcoat in the bid for the six council seats.

Current Coldstream councillor, Ruth Hoyte, is the sole candidate running for mayor.

In the Township of Spallumcheen, Andrew Casson submitted his documents for a council spot. He is the fifth person to enter the race as incumbent councillors Joe Van Tienhoven, Gerry Popoff, Christine LeMaire and Jan Bakker have already filed papers.

No one has entered the mayoral race so far.

In the City of Armstrong, five individuals submitted their nomination packages: Incumbent councillor Paul Britton, as well as new council applicants Kim Sinclair, Neil Todd, Jesse Valstar and Mark Wehner.

No one has officially submitted a bid for mayor in Armstrong, with current mayor Chris Pieper retiring.

In the Village of Lumby, three incumbents submitted their nomination packages. Kevin Acton is looking to reclaim his seat as mayor while Lori Mindnich and Randal Ostafischuk are each seeking another term as councillors.

In the City of Enderby, incumbent mayor Greg McCune is seeking re-election, while Herman Halvorson (former RDNO chairperson and Area F director) is challenging him. Incumbent councillors Tundra Baird, Brian Schreiner and Shawn Shishido, as well as newcomer Sarah Yerhoff, have submitted their paperwork for council.

Candidates for Regional District of North Okanagan directors have also emerged. Amanda Shatzko is looking to keep her seat in Area C (BX-Silver Star), as is Bob Fleming in Area B (Swan Lake Commonage), and Patrick (Rick) Fairbairn in Area D (Rural Lumby).

James Johnson, who served the RDNO prior to this past term, entered the race for director of Area E (Cherryville).

Members of the public will go to the polls Oct. 15 for civic elections in B.C.
